We’re known as riffraffs, rebels and being rowdy. Welcome to Raider nation, baby.

The Bleacher Report even dubbed the Raider Nation fanbase as “the most misunderstood in sports.”

Legendary journalist Hunter Thompson often wrote about the Raiders, their fans and was a contributing columnist for ESPN’s Page 2 publication.

“The massive Raider Nation is beyond doubt the sleaziest and rudest and most sinister mob of thugs and wackos ever assembled,” Thompson wrote.

However, the writer eventually would go on to write columns like this one, “the Oakland Raiders are serious in a different way. They’re deadly serious, and you can take that for whatever it seems to mean. They are assassins, in a word, and they have everything they need in their arsenal.” (Mind you, Thompson published this in 2004.)

So how exactly did this stereotypical image of a “outlandish Raiders fan” come into play?

Well, according to GoldenGateSports.com, the conversation takes an interesting turn when you compare the fanbase’s passion vs. “criminal behavior.”

“The Nation calls it passion and devotion,” journalist Kevin Saito wrote. “Others call it intimidating and scary, as well as indicative of thuggish and criminal behavior.”

Saito then goes on to say that Raider fans have a bad reputation filled with stereotypes, ignorance and “flat out hypocrisy.”

Raider fans are complex, and we’re not a monolith by any means. Each fan has their own unique connection, passion and story when it comes to being apart of the Raider Nation.

Often times, the people have the most to say about Raider fans have never met one.

Raider fans are vivacious with love for their team. And the team symbolizes triumph amid situations that may seem like they may break you. Raiders and the fan represent survival and to not buckle down with fear. We didn’t choose the Raider life. Simply put, it choose us.

To celebrate the love we have for our community, we compiled a list of the greatest fan moments that’ve happened during games.
