ABOUT VITALANT

  • Vitalant is the largest blood supplier in the state of Nevada and the nation’s largest independent, nonprofit blood services provider.
  • We are exclusively focused on providing lifesaving blood and comprehensive transfusion medicine services for about 900 hospitals and their patients across the U.S.
  • Every day, Vitalant needs to collect about 5,300 blood, platelet and plasma donations to help save lives.
  • Social Media – Follow us @ VITALANTNV on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter

NATIONAL BLOOD SHORTAGE

  • Many of the nation’s blood centers, including Vitalant, are experiencing a critical shortage of blood and urge all eligible donors to make an appointment now to donate and replenish the blood supply for patients.
  • Right now, Vitalant has less than a needed four-day supply of most blood types to meet every patient need whenever and wherever it arises.
  • Type O blood is below a two-day supply.
  • Type O is the most transfused blood type and O-negative is what emergency room personnel reach for when there is not time to determine a patient’s blood type.

Type O donors can maximize their impact by giving two units of red cells, or a “Power Red” donation, where other blood components are safely and comfortably returned to the donor.

  • There is also a critical need for platelets which must be transfused within five days of donation. Platelets are tiny cells in blood that form clots and stop bleeding. They are primarily given to cancer patients undergoing treatment.
  • All donors, especially new donors, are needed to make an appointment today for the days and weeks ahead.
  • This critical shortage is happening nationwide at blood centers across the U.S.
  • During May, donations through Vitalant fell short of the need by more than 4,000 donations.
  • On average, donors give several thousand fewer donations each month during the summer compared to the rest of the year, but the need for lifesaving blood transfusions remains steady.
  • In addition to school-hosted blood drives that are largely halted during the summer months, business-hosted blood drive cancellations due to COVID-19 challenges remain high.
  • Even as restrictions begin to be lifted, many businesses continue to work remotely or otherwise limit blood drive opportunities.
  • More than 290 blood drives at businesses have already canceled in June, with over 6,100 associated donations –a four-month high.
  • Vitalant is asking those who may otherwise give blood at work to schedule an appointment now at another Vitalant blood drive or donation center.

 COVID-19 VACCINES AND BLOOD DONATION

  • There is no waiting period to give blood after receiving an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine.
  • People who have received a COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to give blood, platelets or plasma if they meet all general blood donation eligibility requirements.

 BLOOD DONATION FACTS/STATS

  • Every 2 seconds, a hospital patient needs a blood transfusion
  • We need 700 donors per day to meet the needs of blood donations in the Southwest region
  • Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days so we are constantly needing to replenish the blood supply to make sure we have an ample supply available for hospital patients in need

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO DONATE BLOOD

 VIRTUAL BLOOD DRIVES

  • Vitalant is rescheduling blood drives that were canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and welcomes new blood drive hosts too.
  • When an on-site blood drive is not possible, Vitalant offers a unique way to still host a blood drive virtually.
  • COVID-19 continues to cause, on average, nearly 200 blood drive cancellations each week.
  • Vitalant offers a simple solution with our virtual blood drive.
  • Donors can give at any convenient Vitalant donation location (including another community blood drive) while still donating on behalf of their organization.
  • Blood drive coordinators have the flexibility to host on-site blood drives or organize a virtual blood drive.

In this episode, Wendy is joined by Brittany Estrella, Communications Manager for Vitalant in Southern Nevada. Brittany explains why donations have fallen short during the pandemic, where each donation goes and how it saves a life, and how the community can donate. Vitalant is encouraging the community to donate blood this month, and has partnered with Penn & Teller to offer incentive. All donors from December 20 through Jan 1 will receive two tickets to Penn & Teller’s show in Las Vegas.

Original Air Date: December 19, 2021.
