The Raiders are 2-4 and sit in last place in the AFC West. After a 12-4 season that gave Oakland hope the franchise had finally turned the corner, the 2017 team is proving that 2016 was just a mirage.
Sean Smith did not play against the Chargers. The ninth year cornerback was benched, even with rookie Gareon Conley ruled out with a shin injury. Instead the Raiders used David Amerson, TJ Carrie and Dexter McDonald at corner.
The Raiders have yet to intercept a pass this season. They are the only team in the NFL without an interception. The Raiders are also last in the NFL in forcing turnovers, as just 4.8 percent of opponent drives end in turnovers.
4 Straight Losses
The Raiders didn’t see their fourth loss of the 2016 until the final week of the season. It took just six weeks for Oakland to get beat four times in 2017. At 2-4 the playoffs are just a dream for one of the NFL’s trendy preseason Super Bowl picks.
10 Deep Passes
Derek Carr is not throwing the ball down the field. He has the fewest attempts (10) and completions (3) of 20 yards or more in the NFL. The Raiders talented offense is constipated by five yard curls.
Raider quarterbacks have been dropped 13 times in six games this season. Last year the Raiders allowed an NFL-low 18 sacks all season.
17 Charger Points
The Raiders defense hasn’t been horrific this season. They’ve held three teams under 20 points. That should be a recipe for success, but the Raiders are just 1-2 in those games.
42.8 Rushing Yards Per Game
Marshawn Lynch is not averaging 50 rushing yards per game. His current average of 42.8 ranks him 29th in the NFL. His 3.7 yards per carry is just 34th among 47 eligible running backs.
389 Receiving Yards
Amari Cooper has struggled to hang on to passes this season. He has seven drops. But he is only on pace for 389 yards for the entire season. The Raiders have taken a great deep threat and turned him into a five-yard slant receiver.
