Raiders expecting to have Gareon Conley ready for season opener

The Raiders first round draft pick in 2017 has yet to practice this month. But the team is still counting on Gareon Conley to suit up in 13 days when the Raiders open the regular season in Tennessee.

Conley missed all of training camp with a shin injury. He just recently began running again, as he has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He can be activated from it at anytime during the preseaon.

But if he were to start the season on the PUP list, he would have to miss the first six weeks of the season.

Conley is expected to have an immediate impact on the Raiders secondary. But he has to be healthy first. If the Raiders get him practicing soon and ready to go for week one, it could be a huge boost for the defense.

The Raiders cornerbacks have a lot of issues. Conley isn’t practicing, Sean Smith was arrested earlier this month and David Amerson left Saturday’s preseason game with an apparent head injury.

Smith will play for now. He has an arraignment scheduled for September 29, two days before the Raiders play the Broncos.

The Raiders are not commenting on Amerson’s injury. But the number one cornerback, who suffered a concussion last September, laid sprawled on the field while teammates knelt around him after a helmet to helmet hit with a Cowboys receiver on Saturday.

That leaves T.J. Carrie as the only cornerback in the projected top four without any issues that could cause him to miss game time.

The safeties appear to be a better situation. Reggie Nelson and Karl Joseph are the returning starters from last season and they have been joined by rookie Obi Melifonwu, who made his first appearance of the preseason on Saturday.

The Raiders used their first two picks on the 2017 draft on Conley and Melifonwu hoping to beef up the secondary. But with less than two weeks before the season starts, the secondary remains the team’s largest question.
