In the Raiders preseason opener, Jack Del Rio elected to give all of his stars the day off. From Derek Carr to Khalil Mack, the biggest names on the roster did not play against Arizona.
Expect to see those headliners in week two of the preseason.
“Typically you go into the second quarter (with your starters). Maybe even deep into the second quarter,” Del Rio said. “We’ll see how it’s all going. We’ve got kind of a play total in mind in terms of conditioning that we need to hit.”
This will be the first time Derek Carr takes the field with an opponent on the other side since he broke his fibula in week 16 last season. Carr hasn’t shown any signs of being hampered by that injury, and he’ll have a chance to team with his top line receivers.
Neither Amari Cooper nor Michael Crabtree played last week. But both are expected to tonight. Plus, the Raiders newest tight end will take the field for the first time, as Jared Cook will play. Cook came over from Green Bay in the offseason and figures to be the number three target in the Raider offense.
The Raiders gave three of their starting offensive lineman the day off last Saturday, as guards Kelechi Osemele and Gabe Jackson plus center Rodney Hudson did not play.
But with left tackle Donald Penn holding out, the Raiders did play their two tackles last week. Marshall Newhouse is the penciled in left tackle with Vadal Alexander at right tackle. Those two will get their first chance to lineup with the projected starting offensive line. Although that unit could all change once Penn returns.
Running behind a Raider offensive line for the first time will be running back Marshawn Lynch. He made headlines without playing last game by sitting during the national anthem. Lynch avoided questions from the media about his decision to sit during the anthem.
While the Raiders defense will have its biggest stars back in Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin, don’t expect to see the top rookie defensive backs. Gareon Conley has yet to practice with the Raiders, as he is out with a shin injury. And Obi Melifonwu has been slowly working his back into practice, but likely won’t play.
The Raiders host the Rams on Saturday. The game kickoffs at 7:00 pm and can be heard on AM 720 KDWN.
Tyler Bischoff hosts Coaches Corner on AM 720 KDWN Monday through Friday at 6:00 pm.
