Jon Gruden denies he was offered an ownership stake in Raiders

When ESPN reported that Mark Davis was ready to hire Jon Gruden as the Raiders next coach, the compensations was staggering.

$10 million a year and an ownership stake.

Well Jon Gruden denied the report that he was offered an ownership stake this morning when he was on Golic & Wingo on ESPN Radio.

“There’s no truth to that at all,” Gruden said.

He continued: “There’s validity to that at all. None. Zero. No ownership that’s for sure.”

An ownership stake on top of the $10 million salary would have made Gruden one of the most well paid coaches in the NFL.

Gruden acknowledged that he is a candidate for the Raiders job, but feigned ignorance on if he was Raiders owner Mark Davis’ leading candidate.

“I have had conversations with Mark (Davis), and they are still going through the interview process. When he knows, I think we’ll all know,” Gruden said.

When asked if he would accept the job if offered to him, Gruden basically confirmed that he would take the position.

“I think there’s a good chance,” Gruden said of accepting the job if offered. “I am excited about where I am in terms of studying the game and prepared to come back and coach. I just don’t want to sit here and speculate. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s been a long couple of weeks. I know they’ve gone through their process of interviewing people. Until they are done, I won’t know. But I did have a good meeting with Mark (Davis). I’ve known him a long time and I have a lot respect for the Raiders football organization.”

With Jack Del Rio being fired immediately after the week 17 loss to the Chargers it was apparent that the Raiders had been eyeing Gruden for a while. But Gruden essentially confirmed that he has been in Davis’s crosshairs when he said it has been a long couple of weeks.

Gruden was the color analyst for the Raiders Christmas Day game in Philadelphia. Plus Gruden will call the Chiefs-Titans playoff matchup on ESPN this weekend.
