Allmendinger’s Chase spot all but official

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — AJ Allmendinger followed up his victory at Watkins Glen with a 13th-place finish Sunday at Michigan, then had another chance to celebrate when his spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup became all but official.

Assuming he attempts to qualify for the last three races of the regular season, Allmendinger will be part of the 16-car Chase field. He’s 22nd in the standings, but that won’t keep him out under NASCAR’s new format that puts a premium on victories.

“I thought we had a really good shot, but you never know until it’s official,” he said. “Overall the last few weeks, has been really cool to share with the guys and come here and have a little energy and confidence. To come out here all weekend and show some speed has been really good.”

The 12 drivers with victories this season have all wrapped up their spots in the Chase.
