RECIFE, Brazil (AP) — Italy coach Cesare Prandelli says Latin American teams have two key advantages at the World Cup in Brazil.
He says they’re not only accustomed to the hot, humid weather, but they also tend to be more explosive on the attack. Prandelli says that combination creates a double hardship for opponents from somewhat dryer, cooler climates.
On Friday afternoon, Italy meets Costa Rica, the Azzurri’s first Latin American opponent following a win over England in its first Group D game. The Costa Ricans beat Uruguay 3-1 in their first game.
Prandelli says he’s certain his players will suffer from the conditions and hopes FIFA will permit timeouts. At the same time, the Italian coach says his players knew what the weather would be like and can’t use it an excuse.
