CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Busch will start at the rear of the field for the Coca Cola 600 on Sunday after crashing his primary racecar during the final practice session at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Busch had qualified seventh Thursday but will have to give up that starting spot.
Busch’s initial lap of 188.640 mph Saturday was the fastest in the final practice session. A few minutes after turning that lap, though, he hit the outside wall in turn 4. Busch’s was forced to bring the car into the pits.
Busch, who has never won a Sprint Cup race at Charlotte, initially said he was shutting it down for the day hoping his team would be able to fix the car.
Instead, the crew brought out the backup car. The second car wasn’t nearly as fast, posting the 40th best time in qualifying.
