Solid earnings reports from a broad swath of companies pushed the stock market higher on Tuesday. Ameriprise Financial, a wealth manager, Cummins, a maker of diesel engines, and Consol Energy were among companies that reported strong earnings.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 86.63 points, or 0.5 percent, to 16,535.37.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 8.90 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,878.33.
The Nasdaq composite gained 29.14 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,103.54.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 173.91 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 14.93 points, or 0.8 percent.
The Nasdaq composite is up 27.98 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Dow is down 41.29 points, or 0.3 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 29.97 points, or 1.6 percent.
The Nasdaq composite is down 73.05 points, or 1.8 percent.
