How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

KDWN

The stock market closed mostly higher Thursday, helped by positive earnings out of several large U.S. companies including Apple and construction equipment maker Caterpillar. The gains were modest, however, as investors turned their eyes back to Russia and Ukraine, where geopolitical tensions were heating up again. Some earnings reports, such as 3M and Facebook, also failed to impress investors.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average was unchanged at 16,501.65.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 3.22 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,878.61.

The Nasdaq composite rose 21.37 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,148.34.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 93.11 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 13.76 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 52.82 points, or 1.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 75.01 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 30.25 points, or 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 28.25 points, or 0.7 percent.
