NEW YORK (AP) — Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara is still out because of stiffness in his right shoulder and it’s uncertain when he will be able to pitch again.
Red Sox manager John Farrell said Uehara was unavailable for Saturday’s game at Yankee Stadium. Uehara felt discomfort during warmups Friday night before a 4-2 win over New York.
Uehara has said he doesn’t think the problem is a serious one.
Farrell said there’s a chance Uehara would return to Boston for an exam. Farrell said it’s too early to predict whether the right-hander would need to go on the disabled list.
Uehara will try to follow his normal pregame routine on Sunday by throwing at a distance of 200 feet.
The 39-year-old Uehara starred last season as Boston won the World Series title. He has not allowed a run in five games this year, recording two saves while pitching five innings.
