Major U.S. indexes rose broadly Wednesday, helped by a report out of the nation’s central bank that showed Fed policymakers want to be absolutely certain the U.S. economy had recovered before starting to raise interest rates.

Investors also got a dose of good news from Corporate America. Aluminum giant Alcoa reported an adjusted first-quarter profit that was well ahead of analysts’ forecasts.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 181.04 points, or 1.1 percent, to 16,437.18.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 20.22 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,872.18.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 70.91 points, or 1.7 percent, to close at 4,183.90.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 24.47 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 7.09 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 56.17 points, or 1.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 139.48 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 23.82 points, or 1.3 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 7.31 points, or 0.2 percent.
