Wahlberg avoids early slime at Kids’ Choice Awards

One Direction took the lead with two awards at the Kids’ Choice Awards, and more than a dozen current and former Nick teenage stars turned out to honor producer Dan Schneider.

Schneider received the first Kids’ Choice Awards lifetime achievement award Saturday night during the live telecast from Los Angeles. Schneider is the creator of several of the network’s most popular, star-producing shows, including “iCarly,” “Kenan & Kel” and “Sam & Cat,” a current Nickelodeon hit that won favorite TV show and favorite TV actress for star Ariana Grande.

“You’ve made more milk come out of kids’ noses than anyone else,” “Kenan & Kel” and “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson said in a video message.

One Direction won favorite music group and favorite song for “Story of My Life,” Selena Gomez was named favorite female singer at the fan-voted awards, and Kevin Hart took favorite funny star.

Midway through the show, host Mark Wahlberg continued to remain slime free. Only three guests, including singer-producer Pharrell Williams clad in bright yellow SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas, took a shot of the show’s trademark green goo.

Singer Aloe Blacc had the night’s top moment early in the show, leading the crowd in a sing-along of his Avicii-produced hit “Wake Me Up” before joining a children’s choir on his hit “The Man.”

Other winners included favorite movie actor Adam Sandler and favorite TV actor Ross Lynch.

Wahlberg avoids early slime at Kids’ Choice Awards

The Kids’ Choice Awards opened Saturday night with a sprawling Todrick Hall-choreographed extravaganza with swirling color, scores of dancers, a medley of pop hits and Austin Mahone and Cody Simpson trading verses in an attempt to win a sliming and even a wrecking ball.

But the start of the show didn’t include host Mark Wahlberg getting a good-natured slime bath, the hallmark of Nickelodeon’s annual awards in Los Angeles, now in its 27th year.

“Everybody is getting slimed but me,” Wahlberg said of the traditional dousing of green goo. “I know it’s an honor to be slimed … but not this year and not this host. It’s not happening, I apologize.”

Wahlberg then deftly dodged a few half-hearted attempts to spray him before stepping out of the way to let the goo hit Kaley Cuoco and Pharrell, who set another fashion statement by showing up dressed in SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas.

No doubt several of the night’s attendees can expect to be slimed as the show continues. Kevin Hart was the night’s first winner, taking the orange blimp-shaped trophy as favorite funny star at the fan-voted awards. Selena Gomez was named favorite female singer.

Katy Perry is the top individual nominee with three, including favorite voice in an animated movie for the “The Smurfs 2.” `’The Hunger Games” franchise and “The Smurfs 2″ have four nominations apiece.
